Intravenous anesthesia provides a means for completing all of
your children's dental needs while he or she is comfortable, pain-free, and
asleep. Medication is administered intravenously rather than by gas anesthesia.
Your child will awaken soon after the dental treatment is completed, free from
any memory of the dental treatment, the IV and our monitors.
Children with moderate to severe anxiety, a pronounced gag
reflex, and/or those children who, due to age and behavioral immaturity, are
unable to remain relaxed for their needed dental care are candidates for
intravenous anesthesia. Children with physical, neurological, or mental
disabilities such as attention deficit disorders, pervasive developmental
disorders, and mild to moderate physical challenges, such as cerebral palsy, are
also well managed with intravenous anesthesia.
The decision to use anesthesia services to complete dental
treatment is made through consultation between parents, pediatric dentist and
the anesthesiologist.
